Built between the 4th and 5th centuries, it was restored in the 15th century after the dome collapsed. Today’s appearance is due to a subsequent restoration in 1894. The basilica suffered three catastrophic fires. In 1117, it was damaged by a massive earthquake. Underground lie the stones of the most magnificent Roman monument in the city: the Amphitheater. Absolutely worth a visit is the S. Aquilino mausoleum.
