La Sfilata dei Turchi (the Parade of the Turks) is a brilliant finale to the great Maggio Potentino celebration dedicated to St. Gerardo, the patron saint of the city. Over 1334 participants parade the streets in period costume. Before the parade, bearers organise a great community lunch which is traditionally held in Largo Raffaello Pignatari. The parade has its roots in a thousand-year-old legend that blends many stories both true and religious. During the parade three different historical periods are evoked: the twelfth, fourteenth and ninteenth centuries. Legend has it that in 1100 St. Gerardo, bishop of the city of Potenza, performed a great miracle to save the city from Saracen invasions. From then on, the Potentines haven’t ceased to honor tradition with an event that animates the city with cultural entertainment of all kinds.
