Ravenna Festival, started in 1990, is a classical music and opera festival (but that’s not all). The idea came from Cristina Mazzavillani, the wife of Riccardo Muti, the great conductor who often worked in Ravenna.
The event takes place over 2 months in Ravenna and its provinces, with wide-ranging events from opera to ballet, musicals to concerts, dance to theatre, and cinema to shows. Locations include the Alighieri Theatre, the Byzantine basilicas of San Vitale, Sant’Apollinare in Classe, Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and San Francesco, and the piazzas and cloisters situated in the historic centre of Ravenna frame the whole event. There is music for all tastes: opera, jazz, ethnic and electronic. A hugely successful festival, and not to be missed for those visiting Ravenna!
