A unique opportunity to experience all the heart and warmth of the city, is the Palio di Siena, which takes place every year on July 2nd (Palio della Madonna di Provenzano) and on August 16th (Palio dell’Assunta). 10 of 17 districts of the city compete in a horse race in Piazza del Campo. The event, which has very ancient origins, involves the contradaioli that take part in the life of their Contrada, distinguished by the coat of arms and colors. Before the official race there are 6 trails, and the Palio award is the Drappellone, a canvas designed each time by a different artist, that the winning Contrada will exhibit in its own museum.
You can attend the race for free, but you can also buy tickets from the managers of the individual boxes or from the owners of the apartments that overlook the square.
