The Palio dei Rioni Ingauni in Albenga is without doubt the most eagerly awaited summer event held on the “Riviera delle Palme” (Palm Riviera)! Over the course of 4 evenings in July, the 4 districts of the centre of the town go head-to-head in various challenges, coming to an end with the sought-after Palio. A beauty contest called “Pulcherrima Puella” is held at the same time. The whole celebration brings back to life the Mediaeval rivalry between the districts of San Giovanni, Santa Maria, Sant’Eulalia and San Siro, the former two being associated with the aristocracy, the latter two with the commoners.
Summer in Albenga sees locals and tourists alike travel back in time to the Middle Ages – a period of ancient legends and romantic rivalries. Games and tournaments, Mediaeval spectacles, winery events and catering facilities – all very much in period guise – will combine to create a unique, exciting, unforgettable atmosphere.
