Pienza is the capital of Tuscan pecorino cheese, which takes centre stage in the celebrations that are held in the week starting on the first Sunday in September.
The famous cheese festival, eagerly awaited by locals and tourists alike, was first staged in 1974. Attracting them, alongside the deliciousness of this gastronomic delight, is the thrilling “Palio del cacio fuso”, in which the town’s 6 districts compete against each other. This contest has ancient origins, and is even cited in 16th-century statutes of the city of Pienza. It involves rolling large wheels of pecorino cheese around a small wooden spindle located in the centre of the main square. The winner is the one who manages to get his or her wheel as close as possible to the spindle. The festival ends with a wonderful ball in the square. It all adds up to 7 days of unmissable tastings and entertainment!
