The Festival of the Mysteries is the most anticipated and well-attended event in Campobasso. The event takes place on Corpus Domini day and includes thirteen machines, “living pictures of the old and new testament”, the so-called Mysteries, along the main streets of the city. Each Mystery is dedicated to a saint: the Holy Heart, Abraham, Sant’Isidoro, San Crispino, San Gennaro, Santa Maria Maddalena, Sant’Antonio Abate, San Leonardo, San Rocco, San Michele, San Nicola di Bari, the Immaculate Conception, and the Assumption. Each machine has a particular religious significance and is carried by a dozen young people directed by the “chief of mysteries”. Every year, this evocative festival attracts thousands of visitors drawn by the mix of faith and folklore. During the year you can admire the Mysteries’ machines in a museum dedicated to them, in via Trento, where the procession begins.
