The Battaglia dei Fiori (Flower Battle) is a procession of flower-filled floats held in Ventimiglia every year. The event began in the early twentieth century and was awarded traditional Italian Heritage status by the Ministry of Tourism. A dozen floats are decorated with plant material and around 120,000 flowers each, always with a different theme. These colourful floats are true works of art, showing great attention to detail despite their large size. They make their debut with a nighttime procession through the city streets, which concludes with a firework display and “white night” festival. The “battle” is held on the following day, when the floats, followed by bands and folk groups, throw thousands of flowers at each other. All that remains at the end of the day is a carpet of highly scented petals that lines the street.
