Southern Sardinia

If you are looking for an unspoilt paradise, you are undoubtedly in the right place here. The coastline varies from very long sandy beaches, with tall, desert-like dunes, such as those of Piscinas, to cliffs of dark and imposing rocks, and trees elegantly bent back by the wind. Copper red hues can be seen in the geological and mining park of Sulcis, among the abandoned buildings of the deserted mines and villages, once inhabited by miners, nowadays a fine example of industrial archaeology. Here you will find the island’s only real plain, the fertile Campidano plain, where rice is grown that bears the name of the place of origin; other typical products are artichokes and scented, juicy fruit. Southern Sardinia appears to be suspended in time. When you have explored it you too will be captured by its deep fascination and mystery. A land as mysterious as the androgynous mask of Su Componidori, a divinity and master of the Sartiglia of Oristano joust and horse race, and as impenetrable as the age-old history of the nuragic palace of Barumini “Su Nuraxi”, or as Mediterranean as the island of San Pietro, with its Ligurian and Tunisian influences most clearly seen in the town of Carloforte. The hot waters that gush forth from the Roman springs of Fordongianus and Sardara go hand in hand with the rustic and poetic nature of the Giara plateur and its wild horses. Another of the many reasons to go to southern Sardinia is its typical breads, like civraxiu and coccoi, accompanied by a fine glass of wine, Vernaccia and Carignano to name just two.
