Merano & Val Venosta

Quiet valleys, gorgeous blooming apple trees, inviting trails and lakes, and fairytale castles. Who says the mountains are only for skiing? During all four seasons, this area is beautiful, the rare spot where man and nature remain in sync. Even the 19th-century Empress Elizabeth of Austria, known as Princess Sissi, fell in love with Merano, famous for its thermal baths and the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, among the most beautiful in Italy. The area boasts the romantic Lake Resia where a solitary 14th-century bell tower pokes up from the water; Mount Ortler, an alpine peak with five ski resorts, a sports enthusiasts’ paradise; the Val Venosta train; the bicycle route along the ancient Via Claudia Augusta; and the glamorous ski resort town of Madonna di Campiglio. The valley’s famous apples are featured in the area’s rich, delicious dishes, best enjoyed with a top-notch local wine like Gewürtztraminer. The countless wine and food events, festivals and traditions make this a lively, cultural destination.
