Ivrea & Canavese

The profile of the Alps frames the Canavese area, with its charming scenery of natural parks, lakes and castles.

Ivrea, known as “la bella” is considered the capital of this splendid landscape. It is located where the Dora Baltea River flows through, in the morainic amphitheatre, an Alpine formation created glacially during the Quaternary Period. It was the home of the first Italian typewriter factory, founded by Camillo Olivetti – a perfect blend of history and nature. Located along the Via Francigena, it is famous for its historic Carnival featuring the Battle of the Oranges, unique in all the world. The five lakes around the city offer plenty of opportunities for those who love sports.

It’s worth making a stop in Biella, an ancient medieval town famous for its wool and textiles. There’s no shortage of food and wine delicacies to warm you up in winter in the rolling valleys of Canavese: the Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG wine; the soups, such as Faseuj grass; the chocolate, the most important ingredient in the Torta 900 cake; and Ivrea’s local biscuits and polentina.
