This destination is full of towns rich in art and history, and many valleys which, from the first ramifications of the Po Valley, branch out towards the Alpine passes and peaks, where nature is unspoilt and a number of sports can be practised.
From north to south we have Val di Susa, situated between the Cottian Alps and the Graie Alps, famous for the skiing resorts of Bardonecchia and Sestriere and the majestic Sacra di San Michele (St Michael’s Abbey); Val Chisone, with its picturesque town of Usseaux; Valle Varaita, dominated by mount Monviso, the King of Stone from which the river Po spouts; the silent Valle Maira, with its very old stone houses; Valle Stura, rich in fortresses due to its strategic importance as a route to France through the Maddalena Pass; and finally Val Vermenagna, which rises towards Limone Piemonte, the biggest tourist resort of the Maritime Alps.
The main town in the region is Cuneo, with its elegant porticoes and neo-classical Piazza Galimberti. Also worth visiting are Fossano, with its medieval castle, Mondovì, with its Gardens of the Belvedere, and Saluzzo, capital of the Renaissance in Piedmont.
Trekking, skiing, visits to castles, wine and food festivals: here you are guaranteed an unforgettable holiday at any time of the year.
