The Agro Pontino is famous for the drainage work which began in 1924 in the extensive marshlands of the Lazio hinterland south of Rome, and led to the building of a canal network, the clearance of woodland and the creation of new settlements: this was an immense task ordered by Benito Mussolini, and it lasted until 1937. Indeed, the communes in this area, such as Latina, Pontinia, Sabaudia and San Felice Circeo, display the Rationalist architecture typical of Fascism.
Opposite the Agro Pontino lies the archipelago of the Pontine Islands: the largest of these is Ponza, followed by Ventotene and the smaller Zannone, Palmarola, Gavi and Santo Stefano.
The Circeo National Park safeguards a vast array of biomes, including beautiful sea caves, forests of Mediterranean maquis, coastal lakes and a belt of sand dunes, home to various mammals and, above all, numerous bird species, which nest there or fly over the area during their migrations.
The Agro Pontino also contains several extremely interesting fortified villages , such as Sperlonga, Sermoneta, Fondi and Campodimele, alongside natural oases, seaside towns and archaeological sites with Roman ruins.
