Campobasso is like a book you have to read in one go. It isn’t a bestseller that fills the shop windows and is advertised to excess. It is, though, one of those hidden gems, that you don’t expect much of but turns out to be a page-turner. This city is full of green spaces, art and marvellous corners to discover, from the sea to the mountains. Campobasso has an ancient, Medieval district, on the slopes of a hill, which is dominated by the enchanting castle, Castello Monforte, and another area from the more modern nineteenth century, built at the foot of the hill. A mix of history and archaeology, with museums, Romanesque churches and Baroque palazzi.
It is possible to ski, a short distance away at Campitello Matese, to dive into the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea at Termoli, to go shopping in the little artisan shops or to relax at the Thermal Baths in Sepino.
Don’t miss the ancient traditions, like the Sagra dei Misteri, the famous religious festival that is a major tourist attraction. And how can you miss out on the authentic food from Molise, noted for its produce such as oil, cheese, truffles and wine?
