Sun-drenched afternoons, the mistral winds in your hair, the soaring flight of the pink flamingos: this is Cagliari, a young, vibrant city of a thousand different faces. You can start the day with a delicious pizzetta sfoglia from one of the distinctive cabin bars along the Poetto beach, and admire the Sella del Diavolo – the ‘Devil’s Saddle’ – in all its glory. Give in to the mesmerising sound of the waves breaking on the sand, while the ocean air washes over you with a fragrance that never grows tired. There will be plenty of time for long, leisurely walks through the neighbourhoods of the old centre – Stampace to Villanova, La Marina to Castello – bewitching views of a city in the Mediterranean’s blue embrace greeting you with each rise and fall of the historic streets. Delicious local specialities await in Piazza Yenne, accompanied by the ubiquitous Ichnusa beer, friendly conversation, and the unique memories that only a city like Cagliari can offer.
To end the day, the Caribbean-like beaches of Villasimius and Chia are sure to please even the most demanding tourist, with the luxurious resorts of Santa Margherita di Pula framed by some truly splendid natural scenery. At the west end of the gulf, the beaches at Cala Cipolla and Su Giudeu, and the romantic lighthouse of Capo Spartivento are not to be missed; to the east, just outside the city, there is a scenic route that skirts such fantastic sites as the Torre delle Stelle on its way to Villasimius, where you can enjoy some of the finest sunsets the Tyrrhenian Sea has to offer.
