Arezzo & Val di Chiana

Arezzo is not just an encapsulation of nature, nor does it simply provide the backdrop for the history of illustrious figures – it is far more than that. It is the city of gold, the homeland of the poet Francesco Petrarca (known as Petrarch in English) and of the painter and architect Giorgio Vasari, the hub of the Saracen Joust, home to the frescoes of Renaissance master Piero della Francesca, the stage set chosen by Roberto Benigni for the shooting of Life is Beautiful, the capital of the delicious “gattò dolce” dessert, and the casket that safeguards a moving Cimabue crucifix. The city is surrounded by green valleys, beautiful fields and generous soil, tilled to perfection. It is sub-divided into four valleys: Casentino, Valtiberina, Valdarno and Val di Chiana, which is famed for its prized Chianina-breed meat, olive oil and honey, and for its unique Mediaeval castles and villages. There are numerous trekking and mountainbiking trails, through which you can discover this area’s uncontaminated natural wilderness, perhaps before spending the night in one of the fantastic “agriturismi” (working farms with accommodation) nestling in this lush, fascinating landscape.
