Ancona & the Conero Riviera

Sitting atop the Conero promontory, Ancona is a coastal, port city par excellence, which over the centuries has competed with Venice for supremacy on the Adriatic. Bearing witness to the prestige and power of the ‘Gate to the East’ are the works of art that have embellished the city since the Middle Ages, including churches, monuments and noble palaces of the first order, which make it a favourite haunt of those who want to combine a seaside holiday with plenty of culture and entertainment. Culture is everywhere you look as you stroll through the time-honoured centre of Fabriano, as it is in Recanati, birthplace of the great poet Giacomo Leopardi. Wine lovers will enjoy choosing between excellent bottles of Verdicchio di Jesi and Rosso Conero. Very much worth a visit are art-laden inland villages such as Osimo, with its Cathedral and Roman remains, and wonderful Offagna, a Mediaeval outpost clinging to the hillside, where the Orange Flag attests to the quality of the tourist services available. Nature and spirit are exalted on a visit to the Grotte di Frasassi, a series of stunning caves sculpted by water, and the extraordinary Sanctuary Loreto.
